Some engineering methods for eliminating deformation and expansion damage of hydride storage containers

Abstract In this paper we propose a simple solution to the important problem in the industrial application of hydrides that hydrogen storage containers are often damaged by the volume expansion of metal hydrides during repeated hydrogen absorption and desorption. Different solutions have been reported, but most of them are technically complicated and hence expensive. Our present study showed that a simple composite bed of hydrogen storage alloy and aluminium fibre can prevent the deformation and expansion and damage of containers rather effectively. At the same time the thermal conductance of the hydride composite bed is improved.
