Haptenic Relationship between Bovine J, Human A, and Porcine A Blood Group Systems Tested with Lipids and Nonlipid Fractions of Blood

1973
. Total lipids, nonlipid residues obtained after lipid extraction, and mucoproteins prepared from the respective erythrocytes and sera were tested for haptenic activities in the bovine J, human A, and porcine A blood group systems. It is shown that the porcine A antigen resembles the bovine J antigen in 4 respects: both exhibit immuno-logical cross-reactions; both are found dissolved in the serum; the dissolved antigens show similar diversities of carriers; only the lipid-bound antigens seem to be absorbed from the plasma onto the red cells. From further experiments it is concluded that the bovine J substance and the porcine A substance probably contain N-acetyl-d-galactosamhe as the terminal moiety.
