On the Potential of Geomagnetism-aided Vehicle In-out Detection Using BLE RSS

2019
BLE has the potential in transforming current existing vehicle passive entry and passive start (PEPS) scheme due to its widespread embedded on smartphones combined with its low energy, low cost, and wireless features. However, BLE works at 2.4GHz ISM frequency band, which is vulnerable to human-related interference. This disadvantage makes it difficult to improve the accuracy of vehicle in-out detection which is of vital importance for implementing BLE-PEPS. Considering the sensitivity of geomagnetic sensors to vehicle shell and electrical appliances, we propose geomagnetism-aided vehicle in-out detector using BLE RSS. Geomagnetism anomaly detection acts as an auxiliary method when RSS-based identification results occur unexpected jump. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the identification accuracy over 5% when compared to vehicle in-out detector based on RSS in some testing situation.
