STRUCTURE-INDUCED SEAFLOOR SCOUR

1990
The problem of predicting the depth of erosion in a scour hole formed by a steady current passing a vertical cylinder has been examined in order to provide a synthesis of existing data and a method that can be applied in coastal, ocean and river engineering contexts. Nearly a hundred experimental data points have been obtained from the literature and found to be of good quality. These data were fit with a cubic equation in four dimensions and comparisons of the predictive capabilities of this and other equations were made. The range of input parameters for which this relationship can be used was determined and is illustrated. The results are of a quality which allow extension of the method to less restricted fif,d conditions.
