This study aims to analyze the splits of the institution of the hour-activity in the work of the high school teacher at Piaui state, in the context of the educational policies implemented in Brazil in the last two decades. For this, a literature review was carried out, with the help of a documentary research, about the working hours of teachers of basic education in the country and the educational policies that regulate the hour-activity. Then, we analyze the data from semi-structured interviews conducted with: two managers of the Regional Education Management of the Piaui State Secretariat of Education, 20 high school teachers and one member of the Piaui Public Basic Education Workers Union. The results show that the progress in working hours is confronted with the still inadequate working conditions in schools, the interference in the pedagogical organization of the teacher's working time and the low salaries.
