Hands on course may help deliver obstetric care [letter]

We are involved with a scheme in Zambia that has introduced a training programme in emergency skills in obstetrics and gynaecology based on the ALSO (advanced life support in obstetrics) course methods. The programme pioneered in the United States by the American Academy of Family Physicians to update practitioners (especially those working in remote areas) has now expanded not only into Europe— about 35 courses are held in the United Kingdom each year—but also into Brazil Hong Kong and Australia and with modifications to developing countries such as Nepal and Pakistan.
