Media, power and money: the press in post-colonial Macau and Hong Kong

2008
The proposed paper examines the impacts of globalization on the mass media of a small Asian city, Macau. A former Portuguese colony, Macau has a long colonial history but drastic socio-economic changes were triggered by its reversion to China since the turn of the century. Political restructuring brought in a new government with new development policies such as the liberalization of its gaming industry. These new initiatives facilitate the opening of the economy to both global and regional forces. On the front of the mass media, the interplay of politics and market forces is shaping the ecology and autonomy of the press, with the latter bringing in new forms of control as well as new space of autonomy.
