ABSTRACT In every sense of the term, this is a big book. Textbook of Biochemistry is a 1,265-page, 22-author volume with great breadth and a potentially wide audience. Aside from a few minor breaks in organization, the text avoids the pitfalls of multiple authorship—the exposition is remarkably even and clear—while it draws on the expertise of its contributors.The coverage is complete and includes material on protein structure and function; carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolism; DNA replication and transcription; protein biosynthesis; and the regulation of gene expression. In addition, the text contains two chapters each on the biochemistry of hormones and the principles of nutrition, and several chapters in more specialized areas. Sections on complex carbohydrates and glycoproteins, on prostaglandin metabolism, and on nucleic acid secondary and tertiary structure are particularly welcome. Certain areas such as the energetics of biochemical reactions and subcellular organization are handled in less than
