Diagnostic value of MRI in carotid artery stenosis

Objective To evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis.Methods Thirty patients were examined by MRI and magnetic resonance angiography(MRA).23 of these patients underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA).The percentage of stenosis was calculated by using common carotid method (CC).Results We compared the findings of MRI and MRA with the standard method of DSA.MRI and MRA demonstrated a sensitivity of 97.06%,specificity of 70.59%,false negative rate of 2.94% and false positive rate of 29.41%.Conclusions MRI and MRA can be a screening method in the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis.
