Geografia Humana e Geografia da População: pontos de tensionamento e aprofundamento na ciência geográfica Human and Population Geography: tensioning and deepening points of the geographical science

2013
This article aims to present a discussion of the population issue in Geography with emphasis on the issue of Human Geography and Population Geography, and from this dialogue about the relevance of population studies in geographical science. This quarrel is justified by the need of understand the paths taken by population in the context of Geography, either as Human or Population Geography. In this sense, we claim to support the analysis and reflection about the study of population in Geography, to understand the issue of Human and Population Geography, in attempt to comprehend how this population was and is addressed in Geography. For this we turn to a brief overview of what is conventionally called Human Geography, as well as the emergence of Population Geography, either as an unfolding of Human Geography or as a birth of a new area. To establish this dialogue we used as reference some authors such as Ratzel, La Blache, Brunhes, Sorre, Foucault, among others, whose work provided us the theoretical background to deepen our discussion. Having seen the breadth of the subject, we tried to prioritize qualitative aspects, i.e., we applied the method of historical research in order to select authors who bring discussions on the subject, and thus regain some of the history of Geography through the dialectical reading of geographical science. Pondering, that Geography currently can boost the population studies by critical analysis promoting contextualized readings on population phenomena.
