The utility model discloses an escalator based on potential energy conversion and a single-driving mechanism. The single-driving mechanism comprises a motor, a driving shaft, a down-going driven chain wheel and an up-going driven chain wheel. A driving chain wheel of the driving shaft is arranged in the middle of the driving shaft, and the driving chain wheel of the driving shaft is connected with a rotary shaft of the motor through a chain. A down-going driving chain wheel is arranged at one end of the driving shaft and an up-going driving chain wheel is arranged at the other end of the driving shaft. The down-going driven chain wheel is connected with the down-going driving chain wheel through a down-going chain. The up-going driven chain wheel is connected with the up-going driving chain wheel through an up-going chain. According to the escalator, the gravitational potential energy of down-going passengers is converted to the kinetic energy and the gravitational potential energy of up-going passengers, the operation loads of the driving motor are reduced and the operation cost of the escalator is reduced.
