The right to work and freedom of work is a constitutional right of every citizen of the Republic of Croatia. As the first and fundamental step in the realization of this right and all other labor law obligations and rights, is the establishment of an employment. In Republic of Croatia it is regulated by the Labor Act. The regulations of this law enable the subjects in the employment relationship to define obligations, working conditions, salary and other similar rights that regulate their relationship. The document that is crucial in establishing an employment is an employment contract that can be contracted for an indefinite and definite period of time. It defines the obligations and rights of workers and employers. Employer has a right to decide which form of the contract to offer, mostly depending on the activity he performs. Some activities require special conditions for establishing a relationship. These conditions may be regulated by law, collective agreements and other regulations. In this case, the employer can sign an employment contract only with the person that meets these conditions. Thus, we distinguish between the basic conditions under which persons can be employed in the Republic of Croatia, and these are general conditions related to age of the person, and special conditions regulated by the legislation for the certain jobs.
