Braking Characteristics of Chinese Driver in Highway and Urban Road

Abstract To research Chinese driver's braking characteristics in highway and urban road, this paper carries out the field experiment, analyzes the braking reasons based on the inter-vehicle relationships, and research the distribution of THW and TTC when braking under different road types and braking reasons. First, the braking reasons are classified into three categories according to the various inter-vehicle relationships between the test vehicle and its leading vehicle, then the ratios of the braking categories are studied, finally the distribution of THW and TTC under different road types and braking reasons are analyzed by variance analysis and relevance analysis. The conclusions come out that the drivers tend to brake more in urban road especially when the leading vehicle brakes, the road types and braking reasons have a significant influence on THW compared with TTC, THW and TTC present an approximate linear relationship in urban road. The research results can support the design of the DAS such as Collision Avoidance System.
