Infrared sensor modules using uncooled 320x240 / 640x480 detector

2017
ABSTRACT The authors have successfully developed versatile uncooled infrared sensor modules, which have the dual dynamic range drive (DDRD) feature en abling both a wide object temperature range and a high temperature resolution and are applicable to a variety of uses. These mo dules allow users to get not only thermal images of room temperature objects at a high temperature resolution but also those of high temperature objects. The sensor driven by the modules is of the bolometer type having the pixel pitch of 23.5um, which may be the smallest pitch among commercial uncooled sensors in the world. The article describes the characteristics and performance of the modules and introduces the DDRD feature. Keywords: uncooled, module, object temperature range, DDRD 1. INTRODUCTION Uncooled infrared cameras have such advantages as, smaller size, lighter weight, lower price, lower power consumption, and no cooler maintenance, over cooled cameras. This results in larger needs of uncooled infrared cameras and thus they have been intensively developed. NEC has developed bolometer type uncooled infrared sensors, having features of high temperature resolution, low drift and low power consumption and including on-chip readout integrated circuit (ROIC) with array formats of 320x240 and 640x480 having 23.5um pitch [1][2][3]. Using these sensors, NEC has also developed uncooled infrared cameras and camera modules. Being smaller, lighter and lower in r unning cost than conventional cameras, these cameras have been widely used for temperature measurement fields, security fields and defense fields. These cameras have recently been highly desired to have smaller size, lighter weight and lower price for expecting their better operability and portability. In addition, improving NETD and enlarging the incident temperature range of the sensors are continuously required in all markets. The authors have developed small infrared camera modules for a variety of uses, in addition to current product lineup. These modules are equipped with uncooled infrared sensor having 320x240 pixels of 23.5um pitch (HX0830) and 640x480 pixels of 23.5um pitch (HX3100). The module equipped with HX0830 or that equipped with HX3100 is called HX0830M1 or HX3100M1, respectively. The authors focused on the needs of wider dynamic range together with higher temperature resolution for applications of fire fighter and predictive maintenance, where high temperature phenomena occurs and high temperature process is used. In order to meet these requirements, experiment of DDRD function shown in this article was carried out on the module developed here. With the idea of sensor driving method and user interface, the feature can provide imaging both with a high temperature resolution in the room temperature range and wide temperature range up to several hundreds degrees centigrade. The feature allows users to take advantages of both a high temperature resolution and a wide dynamic range without image interruption and specific operations.
