The Secret of Human Life (as published)

1993
Suggested by modern theories of gene benefit, this paper hypothesizes an inner system of emotional mechanisms that may explain many puzzles of human behavior. I call it the biostatus system, since it parallels and interacts with social status in various ways. In this hypothesis, the emotions of exhilaration and depression are a unified feedback mechanism for personal and/or genetic success. This fits ordinary life and suggests explanations for emotional conflict, addiction, cruelty and paranoia.
