HIGHENERGY,HIGHBRIGHTNESSX-RAYSPRODUCED BY COMPTON BACKSCATTERINGATTHE LIVERMORE PLEIADESFACILITY

2005
PLEIADES(Picosecond Laser Electron Interaction for theDynamic Evaluation ofStructures) produces tunable 30-140 keVx-rays with0.3-5 pspulse lengths andupto 10A7photons/pulse by colliding a highbrightness electron beamwithahighpowerlaser. Theelectron beam iscreated byanrfphoto-injector system, accelerated bya 120MeV linac, andfocused to20 Fm withnovel permanent magnetquadrupoles. To produce Compton backscattered x-rays, theelectron bunchisoverlapped withaTi:Sapphire laser thatdelivers 500mJ,100fs, pulses totheinteraction point. K-edge radiography at115 keVonUranium hasverified theangle correlated energy spectrum inherent inComptonscattering andhigh-energy tunability oftheLivermore source. Current upgrades to thefacility willallowlaserpumpingoftargets synchronized tothex-raysourceenabling dynamic diffraction andtime-resolved studies ofhighZ materials. Nearfuture plans include extending theradiation energies to>400keV,allowing fornuclear fluorescence studies of materials.
