Accident Analysis and Crash Prediction Model for Mahatma Gandhi Expressway (NE-1)

2020
Road transport is an important part of the development of India because it provides mobility to people and goods. But it also leads people to danger about road accidents, injuries, and fatalities which contributed to the leading cause of deaths. Road accident report of 2018 states that every day approximately 1,280 accidents and 415 deaths and every hour 53 accidents and 17 deaths occurred. So, the investigation of accident statics leads to finding out the factors that contribute to accidents and helped in the development of that road section. This research is mainly focused on accident statistics and to find a hazardous location (blackspot) using linear referencing with the use of TransCAD software and also developed a crash prediction model and suitable remedial measures for providing road safety suggested. For this paper, the stretch of National Expressway-1 has been selected from Ahmedabad to Vadodara because around 1058 accidents and 50 deaths every year and nearly 44 accidents every hour occurred. So, the analysis of accident statistics 3 years (2016-2018) of accident data was collected and analyzed using accident frequency and severity index method for finding out a hazardous section of 1 km length then further this location data analyzed by strip charts for finding out blackspot (100m or 200m) and provide remedies to that locations.
