Gendering the Global Governance of Migration

This chapter will examine the discourses and practices that key international organisations (IOs) have developed to understand and to govern the ‘feminisation of migration’. International organisations (IOs) have made an important contribution to the gendering of contemporary international debates on migration by developing gendered representations of the issues and engaging in various practices designed to provide solutions. Yet just as ‘gender equality and women’s empowerment’ remain a contested norm, so too do IOs offer competing versions. For some, this is limited to gendering the ‘migration management’ discourse. IOs more closely linked to feminist networks however offer more critical rights-centred alternatives.
