A Simple Approach for Evaluating the Stress Concentration Factor of a Corroded Surface using the Fast Fourier Transform
2020
Abstract In this study, a numerical approach for evaluating the SCF of corroded steel plates with irregular surface was investigated. Complex surfaces were dissembled into sinusoidal waves by FFT and the SCF was calculated using the shape parameters of the derived waves. 3-dimensional surface data was divided into 2-dimensional data in direction of load and the width of pitting corrosion was assumed to be the same in all directions. Compared to results of FEA, the SCF has a percentage error of 0.8% and 10 largest SCFs were detected at the same location with the maximum percentage error of 2.2%.
