The Rise of the Machines: Will they fulfill the Restoration Promise?

Ex situ preservation for liver transplantation (LT) has consisted primarily of static cold storage (SCS) with more recent approaches consisting of normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) and hypothermic oxygenated preservation (HOPE). NMP mitigates the hepatocellular injury due to SCS, which remains the basis of routine graft preservation. NMP devices simulate near-physiological conditions by circulating oxygen, blood, and nutrients.
