COMPLICATIONS OF INTESTINAL STOMAS

Objective: This study was conducted to know the frequency of various indications and complications of intestinal stomas. Material and Methods: This hospital based, descriptive study was carried out in the Surgical Unit of Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, Pakistan from June 2002 to June 2004. One hundred consecutive cases with some form of intestinal stoma were included in the study. All the relevant data including age, sex, indication, grade of surgeon and physical complications were recorded on a proforma. Psychological and biochemical complication were excluded from the study. Results were analyzed at the end of the study. Results: Out of 100 cases, 74% cases were operated as emergency while 26% cases were operated in elective settings. Mean age was 37.8years. Ileostomy was the main procedure done in 65% cases while colostomy was done in 30% of cases. Colorectal carcinoma (22%) penetrating abdominal trauma (22%) and typhoid perforation (20%) were the main indications for stoma formation. Some of the major complications noticed were skin excoriation (12%), oedema of spout (8%), prolapse (6%) and retraction (4%). In majority of the patients, these complications were managed with conservative measures while some of the patients required revision of the stoma. Conclusion: Formation of stoma is a safe procedure for various abdominal pathologies. Complication rate is acceptable and can be further reduced by taking appropriate measures.
