A Cell Loss Recovery Method Using FEC in

1991
This paper proposes a new cell loss recovery method to be applied to virtual paths (VP's) of ATM networks. Its advantages over conventional methods on virtual circuits (VC's) include reduced coding/decoding delays and facility sharing. In addition to consecutive cell loss compensation abil- ity, another feature of this method is that cell loss compensa- tion facilities are only required at VP terminating nodes. When a cell is discarded due to buffer overflow, successive cells also tend to be discarded. This paper first briefly describes the cell discard process. It compares cell loss recovery methods applied to VC's and those applied to VP's. A cell loss recovery method is then proposed. Performance estimations show an outstand- ing reduction in cell loss rate.
