Medical and Surgical Advances in the Treatment of Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis

Purpose In this chapter, unilateral vocal fold paralysis is described, and treatment options are discussed with emphasis on recent developments in treatment. Conclusion Unilateral vocal fold paralysis is a disorder commonly encountered by otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists alike and is caused by dysfunction of one of the recurrent laryngeal nerves leading to dysphonia and dysphagia. The etiology of this disorder can include malignancy, iatrogenic injury, or traumatic injury or may be due to idiopathic causes, and evidence has suggested that the rates of different etiologies have changed over time. Treatment options include a variety of approaches and range from expectant management, voice therapy, as well as surgical and procedural approaches.
