SERVING THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON'S HUSKY STADIUM
2001
In 1987 the University of Washington (UW) expanded the Husky Stadium used for football from 58,500 seats to 72,200. In order to gain approval from the City of Seattle for the expansion, the University agreed to put in place a transportation management plan (TMP) that mitigates the potential increase in vehicle traffic and parking impacts created by the stadium expansion. One part of this paper looks at the success of the TMP in the years since 1987 when it was first implemented. In the spring of 2000, the Kingdome located in downtown Seattle was imploded to make room for a new outdoor stadium for the Seattle Seahawks professional football team. Since the new stadium is on the site of the former Kingdome, the Seahawks needed another place to play for the year 2000 and 2001 seasons. Husky Stadium was an obvious choice but the Seahawks faced considerable barriers from UW neighbors and faculty and staff of the UW. Another even more aggressive TMP was put in place for the Seahawk games and this experience is the topic of the second part of this paper.
