Risky business. All in on map-matching ?

2008
When nationwide road pricing systems could cost hundreds of millions, should we be cautious about one of the sacred cows of GPS road use metering - or is it a gamble worth taking? This article discusses the main approaches to using GPS to meter road use for tolling. The first is digital maps which can be placed in the vehicle, when onboard map-matching can be used to guess which road the vehicle is on, and then look up the cost of that road and generate a bill. Alternatively, the data can be shipped off to an offboard service and the guessing and pricing can be performed there. The advantages and challenges of these systems are also discussed.
