Occupational radiation dose for medical workers at the University Hospital Center “Mother Theresa” in Tirana

2021
The exposure to environmental and “artificial” radiation sources was investigated in the University Hospital Center “Mother Theresa” in Tirana. The concentration of indoor radon exceeds the reference level of 300 Bq m−3 in some 50% of workplaces, accounting for an average effective dose rate of 3.7 mSv y−1. The average dose rate due to external gamma radiation was measured to be 0.12 mSv y−1. While, the occupational exposure of medical workers was found to be 0.67 mSv y−1 on average. The high radon concentrations account for approximately 83% of worker radiation dose, indicating the need for adopting mitigation actions.
