Post-transplant Psychosocial and Mental Health Care of Pancreas and Visceral Transplant Recipients

2019
For patients who have undergone successful pancreas or multivisceral/intestinal (MV/I) transplantation, freedom from the demands of intrusive daily self-care associated with dependence on insulin or parenteral nutrition becomes a reality. Improved quality of life is generally achieved, but not without adjustments and potential psychological complications. Among children receiving MV/I transplant, underdeveloped feeding behaviors and preexisting developmental delays may require clinical attention. While limited data exist for post-transplant psychological concerns with pancreas and MV/I transplant, available information was gathered to not only assist in post-transplant patient care but to also facilitate pre-transplant education and care planning.
