MR imaging for detection of middle ear cholesteatoma can be performed by using non–echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging alone, avoiding the need for contrast agent administration; this technique has much higher sensitivity than delayed gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MR imaging.
