Graphitized carbon and high surface area for the same procedures

2008
Procedure for obtaining graphitized carbon of high surface area, comprising the steps of subjecting graphitization and increasing the surface area, in any order, of a carbon material starting, optionally carbon black, to form graphitized carbon of high surface area, wherein the step of increasing surface area occurs by oxidation and in which the difference in surface area between the carbon of high surface area and the material starting carbon is from 100 to 1500 m2 / g, in the step of graphitization comprising either be heat treated to a temperature of between 800 and 2700 ° C for a period of from 0.01 to 10 hours, or contacting with a catalyst at a temperature of 1500C, optionally less than 1200 ° C, for a period of from 0.01 to 10 hours and wherein the increase in surface area occurs by oxidation, and wherein the oxidation comprises contacting one or more of O2, air, O3, an acid containing oxygen, water or CO2, optionally in the presence of catalyst; and / or oxidation comprises fluidizing a fluidizing medium comprising either water vapor or oxygen for a period of from 0.5 to 30 hours, the fluidizing medium having a temperature of from 300 to 1500C, in graphitized carbon wherein the high surface area has a smaller spacing d of 0.3500 nm as measured by XRD.
