Espiroquetosis intestinal, un reto endoscópico

2017
Human intestinal spirochetosis (IS) is a condition defined histologically by the presence of spirochetal microorganisms attached to the apical cell membrane of the colorrectal and appendicular epithelium. It is assume that invasion of microorganisms beyond the surface epithelium may be associated with gastrointestinal symptoms that usually respond to antibiotics, whereas superficial localization may be mostly asymptomatic. Nowadays, it remains a matter of debate whether this is a true pathogen or a commensal microorganism. We present the first reported case in Costa Rica, an immunocompetent patient with gastrointestinal symptoms, who evidenced a noninvasive IS with symptomatic response to antibiotics.
