Get Moving: Physical Activity and Exercise for Mental Health

2020
Abstract This chapter highlights the accumulating evidence regarding the high level of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour among people living with mental illness. Particular emphasis will be given to the psychological, cognitive, and physical health benefits of physical activity for people with schizophrenia and related illnesses. Current approaches used to promote increased physical activity will be described and critically evaluated, along with the role of exercise physiologists in mental health care. The reader will also learn about the motivators and barriers to implementing evidence-based interventions to increase physical activity.
