Application of Genetic Algorithm to Layer Patterning of Plate Fin Heat Exchanger

2017
Abstract In the present work, a method for optimal design of layer pattern on plate fin heat exchanger (PFHE) is developed using a genetic algorithm (GA) which is a kind of heuristic algorithm. The GA structure for applying to the layer stacking pattern of PFHE is introduced and Evaluate Fitness function in a GA is modified for considering abnormal operating conditions. The proposed algorithm is characterized by objective function based on maximum metal temperature difference between layers. In addition, it has a checking module to reduce iteration time. The validation of algorithm is tested by the case study of natural gas (NG) liquefaction system through a commercial software. The optimal layer stacking pattern from proposed GA has a maximum metal temperature difference lower than 30% compared to result from conventional segregated method.
