Genistein–a supplement improving efficiency of the human body: A review

Summary Objectives In our review, we have compiled and discussed studies relating to the effects of genistein on the efficiency of the human body. News Genistein is a compound classified to isoflavones, phytoestrogens and polyphenols. It is found in many products, such as soy, potatoes or beans. (So far, many studies confirming the healthy effects of this compound to the body have been conducted. One of the aspects of genistein is its effect on exercise capacity. It reduces adipose tissue, inhibits cytodifferentiation of adipocytes and also prevents lipogenetic processes. It also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides levels. It shows myoprotective effect, preventing muscle atrophy and damage, and also affects the growth of muscle mass. It reduces the concentration of cortisol, commonly called stress hormone, which has an negative effect on fat metabolism and skeletal muscle. It also supports glucose transport and regulates carbohydrate metabolism, reducing insulin resistance. However, due to estrogen-like action, it lowers testosterone levels. Conclusion Genistein is a potential nutrient for physically active people.
