Pictorial letter or pictography, is the oldest form of the letters, which was developed by prehistorical people, and it is considered as the oldest and the original script of the Sumerians. Pictorial letter was developed as the need for communication with which they kept the record of the events of then population such as various wars, hunting techniques, commercial transactions or to express their thoughts. From writing down on the stones, bones, leather and other materials, pictorial letter developed to the writing down on the paper with various graphical techniques. Graphic techniques such as engraving, woodcut and lithography or flat printing technique, have contributed to the development of pictorial letter. Nowadays, pictorial letter is used in various areas such as children's encyclopedias, books: fairy tales, fables, picture books etc. Pictography is also used in tattooing where every image, in most cases, is representing something and has a deeper meaning. It is also used in comics for fun and imagination, but also in rebus where we have to “puzzle” to come up with solution. Moreover, we can also find pictorial letter in many sciences where there are various symbols that represent something and have their meaning since the beginning of the development of pictorial letter. An example of this is astronomy, medicine, physics, mathematics etc. Pictorial letter has significantly contributed to the development of further letters and completed human communication.
