Calculating lightning overvoltages in underground cable lines

A mathematical model has been developed for an underground cable line that makes it possible to employ a wave calculation method to analyze pulse processes in a line. Numerical investigations based on the proposed mathematical model of the line have shown satisfactory agreement with experimental results and that the transverse currents in the earth are the principal factor responsible for smoothing of the front and reduction of the amplitude of potential impulses propagating along the sheath.
