Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto SGW using KMnO4 as an initiator

Stone groundwood of Chinese southern pine was grafted with acrylonitrile. The effect of lignin content and its structure on the grafting was examined. Lignin exhibited a retarding effect on the reaction and could be grafted as well. At the proper concentration of KMnO 4 , lignin took part in grafting smoothly. On the contrary, a severe decrease in grafting was observed when the concentration of KMnO 4 was raised up to certain level. It was found that the free phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin played a decisive role
