Clinical analysis of 11 cases of leukemia during pregnancy

Objective To investigate the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of leukemia during pregnancy. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 11 cases of leukemia during pregnancy in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 2010 to October 2015. Clinical data included clinical manifestation, laboratory examination, management and follow-up outcome. Results Of 11 cases, 3 cases presented without any clinical symptoms, 8 cases presented with typical or atypical clinical symptoms. Blood routine tests were found abnormal in all 11 cases and were diagnosed as leukemia by bone marrow biopsy. Eight cases were diagnosed as acute leukemia and 3 cases were chronic myeloid leukemia. In six patients with acute leukemia received chemotherapy, 5 patients were alive, 1 patient died two month later after delivery. Two patients with acute leukemia refused chemotherapy and died. All the 3 patients with chronic myelocytic leukemia underwent chemotherapy and then were alive. The results of follow-up were that 7 patients were alive, 1 case was lost of follow-up, and all of 5 newborns were alive. Conclusions Leukemia during pregnancy was rare, the diagnosis of leukemia during pregnancy was often delayed due to the symptom similarity to those of pregnancy. The treatment of leukemia during pregnancy should be made according to the different type of leukemia, gestational age, pregnant women and fetal conditions.
