An integrated smart, green, resilient, and lean manufacturing framework: A literature review and future research directions

2021
Abstract Today, manufacturers are under pressure to manage their activities and resources more efficiently while maximizing profitability. At the same time, they are required to minimize the adverse effects on the environment. Manufacturers are applying lean and green practices as a solution to achieve improved environmental performance. However, with the outbreak of coronavirus, this equation is highly disturbed. This has forced many manufacturers worldwide to consider the resilience of their existing manufacturing practices and realize the importance of including new paradigms based on smart green and lean principles. Nevertheless, there is a lack of literature on the integration of these paradigms and their interrelationships. This paper aims to provide an enlightening compendium on recent evolutions in this field, using a literature review to combine the four paradigms of smart, green, resilient, and lean in the manufacturing domain. The study underlines the emerging gaps and the unexplored areas in this field. Finally, we proposed two research frameworks to guide the practitioners and research scholars.
