Comparative Study for High-Speed Permanent Magnet Motors with Solid and Ring Type Rotors

In this paper, two high-speed permanent magnet motors (HSPMMs) with solid and ring type permanent magnet rotors are designed and analyzed. The two HSPMMs with different rotor structures are compared comprehensively at the same speed, loss and output power. The electromagnetic performances for the two motors are analyzed in this study by Finite Element Method (FEM) Moreover, the thermal performances of the two motors are also estimated at the same cooling condition by the lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) method. It is found the ring type permanent magnet rotor structure is with lower operational temperature for the HSPMM in this application.
