A process for the production of organic compounds and products made from these organic compounds comprising the steps of: a) electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO b) cultivation of the organic compound producing methylotrophic microorganism or a cell or crude extract thereof which has at least one pathway for the utilization of C1 compounds of step a) as a carbon and energy source, c) accumulation of the organic compound in the cells of the microorganism or discharge into the medium.
