Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism by product of the peak velocity of thyroid arterial branch and heart rate

2007
Objective To explore the value of diagnosing hyperthyroidism by product of the peak velocity of thyroid arterial branch and heart rate. Methods Forty-six patients with hyperthyroidism(HET),19 with subclinical hypothyroidism(SHT) and 21 with hypothyroidism(HOT) diagnosed in clinic and confirmed by nuclear medicine examinations underwent color Doppler sonography and the product of the peak velocity of thyroid arterial branch and heart rate(PBVH) was measured and compared with the normal values. Results The PBVH of HET were significantly higher than that of SHT,HOT and normal(P0.01).When PBVH≥70 was used as the diagnostic criterion for HET,the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 97.8%,97.6% and 97.7%,respectively.PBVH was superior to Vmax≥0.8m/s for diagnosing HET(P0.01).Conclusion Detecting HET by PBVH is a simple and practical method with high diagnostic accuracy rate.
