IoT Infrastructure for Environmental Monitoring: A Case at Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve

2020
Lake Chini UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a unique lentic ecosystem which is home to a rich and diverse biodiversity of flora and fauna. It must be conserved, preserved and protected to ensure all resources with economic values are protected and being managed well. Ensuring healthy water quality is vital for the survival of this ecosystem. Lake Chini Research Center has been monitoring the climate, hydrology and water quality of the area since 2010 using sensors, data networks and server. However, years of human activities which discharged waste into the lake as well as the big flood of 2014/2015 has totally decimated the infrastructure. Revamping current stations is not a matter of replacing all available devices and tools. New requirements from stakeholders need to be incorporated into the new architecture. The new solution provide end-to-end IoT solution for environmental preservation which include sensors, connectivity, middleware, analytics and early warning.
