Costa Rica's Entitlement To An Extended Continental Shelf

2012
This investigation examines the concept of continental shelf by considering international agreements such as the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), devoted its provisions of Part VI of the Convention, consisting of articles 76 to 85 to the definition of the continental shelf and the establishment of the basic rights and duties of coastal States with respect to the continental shelf and its resources. As well as the role of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in providing assistance to coastal States according to Annex II of UNCLOS will be reviewed together with international practice concerning the outer limits of the continental shelf; such as the case of Costa Rica, during 2009 claiming its outer limits of the continental shelf based upon article 76 of UNCLOS will be evaluated.
