Graphene with reciprocating carbon chains for long-term corrosion protection

2021
Abstract Graphene coatings generally cannot provide effective long-time protection for metal substrates. In this study, we developed a novel graphene coating that forms reciprocating carbon chains at the defects of graphene (FRCCDG). The FRCCDG coating deposited on Ni substrate exhibits excellent corrosion resistance over extended durations. Compared with conventional graphene coatings, FRCCDG coatings have lower defect density and higher crystallinity. They form a barrier at the defects of the graphene, thereby hindering the penetration of corrosive elements and improving the ability of graphene to inhibit corrosion. When exposed to air for a period of seven months, the degree of oxidation of FRCCDG-coated Ni foil is lower than that of uncoated substrate. This confirms that the FRCCDG coating has long-lasting corrosion and oxidation resistance.
