END ISLANDS AS AN ELEMENT OF SITE DESIGN

End islands are a significant element in the design of parking lots and on-site circulation for retail, office and multi-family housing developments. The ways in which they enhance both the functional and aesthetic qualities of a developmenrt are noted and discussed: delineates on-site circulation roadways; ensures adequate sight distance at the intersection of the parking aisles and ring roads and private roads; defines the area and geometry of intersections of parking aisles and the ring road and perimeter road; protects the vehicle at the end of a parking bay; and provides aesthetic enhavcement. The design considerations related to end islands are discussed and include the following: geometrics; landscaping; and curbs.
