Smart Grid Applications and Communication Technologies

2021
Today with the emergence of smart grid applications, advanced information, communication, computing, and optimization technologies supporting two-way information flow, smart sensing, machine learning, and data analytics have been incorporated into the existing power grid. These technologies and applications improve grid reliability and efficiency as well as contribute to raising customer expectations. A smart grid is an extremely complex system, consisting of electrical and communication infrastructure with thousands of grid devices, sensors, meters, switches, controllers, distributed generators and storage devices, and many more. Communication and networking technologies play a critical role in enabling smart grid applications and manage grid devices through two-way information flow. Difficulties in developing communications and networking architecture for different smart grid applications come from the complexity and variety of different requirements. This chapter focuses on discussing communication network requirements for supporting different smart grid applications with respect to their reliability, latency, and payload characteristics. A comprehensive assessment is performed to evaluate different smart grid applications in generation, transmission, distribution, and customer domains. This chapter discusses potential physical and link-layer communication technologies, including both wired and wireless, and assesses their suitability for smart grid application deployment.
