Somatometric Study in the Infant of Gestational Diabetic Mother

The infant of a gestational diabetic mother (IGDM), has been considered as the prime example of a macrosomic newborn. In the strict sense any baby with a birthweight greater than two standard deviations above the mean for gestational age can be considered macrosomic or large for gestational age (LGA). However, not all LGA are IGDM and, on the other hand, tight control during diabetic pregnancy decreases the neonatal overweight (Olofsson etal., 1984; Kitzmiller etal., 1978).
