EXPLORATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF AYURVEDIC DRUGTHERAPY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CHARMADALA(ATOPIC DERMATITIS) IN CHILDREN

Background: Atopic dermatitis affects the estimated 1-5% of world population. It Affects more than 10-20% of children, less than 14 years of age. Based on the symptoms, the Ayurvedic disease entity of Charmadala can be correlated with Atopic dermatitis. Objectives: The Objective of the present study was to assess the test drugs for its curative effect on Chamadala(Atopic dermatitis) in children. Methods: All the patients in the study group were treated with local application of Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.) churna and Yashada bhasma (Zinc Based Ayurvedic metallic preparation) along with the moisturizing cream, while placebo group patients were treated with simple moisturizing cream on the patches twice per day. The mothers who were feeding children with breast milk in both groups were given Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa Royle ex Benth.) and Kiratatikta decoction - 30ml every day throughout the course of treatment.Results: Statistically significant reduction in the symptoms of Kandu (pruritus) by 81.81% andRookshatha (dryness) by 72%, the Pidaka (papules) by 83.33% in the patches of Chamadala Was obtained. Conclusion: The local application helped in reducing the pathology of Chamadala Owing to the steroidal properties of Yashtimadhu, wound healing and moisturizing properties of Yasada bhasma.
