American Studies in Singapore

□ The term "American Studies" as used in this paper is limited in its reference to subjects that focus directly on specific aspects of the American experience subjects like "The American Economy," "American Literature," and so forth and studies by American scholars on the concepts, theories and methodology related to various disciplines and bearing titles like The Theory of Economics, Anarchy, State and Utopia, or On Human Aggression. Of the institutions of higher learning in Singapore, this survey covers only humanistic studies at the University of Singapore, although the content and conclusions reached are based, for the most part, on interviews and answers to a questionnaire sent to members of staff at the University of Singapore, Nanyang University, the Institute of Education (a teacher-training college) and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (a research institute). As yet, there is no provision in the curricula of the two universities in Singapore for American Studies as an integrated interdisciplinary area studies program.
