Investigation of Creep Effects in Diffusion Bonded Pump Impeller

2019
Objectives: The purpose of this investigation is to find the distortion of vanes in a centrifugal pump impeller during diffusion bonding which is used in aerospace application. Methods/Statistical Analysis: The manufacturing process which involves diffusion bonding of impeller and its cover made up of titanium alloy Ti-5Al-2.5Sn that produces coalescence of the faying surfaces by the application of pressure at elevated temperature. During this process it undergo atomic diffusion at the surface, as a result it forms into a single piece and produces some thermo-mechanical deformations which are due to the creep. Here the parameters like deformation, stress and pressure at the contact of vane surface are considered. Findings: Finite element analysis is done to investigate the parameters at vanes that would occur during the bonding process. And the results are compared with the experimentally measured values of height between impeller and its cover at equal intervals. Application/Improvements: This investigation helps in reduction of quality rejection and manufacturing personnel to know how much the deformation will be induced after the diffusion bonding process.
